This is a blended family, blessed to have two wonderful children to carry on their parent's legacies. Melissa Kay Bakeberg was born to Wilbert and Sharon Bakeberg in 1980. Sean Mikal Shepherd was born to Danny and Cheryl Shepherd in 1975.
Melissa's father was killed in a hunting accident when she was just turning two years old, and Sean's parents initially separated when he was only four years old, and subsequently divorced.
Danny and Sharon met in Hawaii while he was serving on the Commander-in-Chief Pacific Fleet's Staff located at Makalapa Crater in Pearl Harbor.
Specifically, Sharon and Melissa were vacationing on Oahu with friends from Alaska, distant relatives of Danny's, and were using Danny and Sean's townhouse as their guest quarters. After a few days of seeing each other and eating dinner together, Danny got up the nerve to ask Sharon out on a date - she accepted.
The rest is history! They were married, shortly after they met in 1984, at Waimea Falls Park on Oahu's North Shore.
The environment in Hawaii proved to be problematic for Sean from the outset of their move to the Islands from San Diego. Due to Sean's worsening asthmatic condition, Danny sought to retire from the Navy in late 1984. However, after consulting with the brass, Danny was talked into accepting one last assignment as the XO of the Naval Security Group at Elmendorf AFB, Anchorage, Alaska. It wasn't a hard sell...that's where Danny had planned to retire to, and afterall, Sharon and Melissa still maintained a home in nearby Eagle River, so, it seemed a perfect fit.
Sean's asthma condition became manageable and he and Melissa both completed their elementary and secondary education in Eagle River, attending Eagle River Elementary, Homestead Elementary, Greuning Junior High, and Chugiak High School.
Sean is now completing his teaching degree at the University of Alaska, Anchorage, while Melissa is wrapping up her junior year at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
Danny retired in late 1986, and Sharon and he now enjoy the freedom of enjoying all that Alaska has to offer and travelling around the country whenever the urge strikes them.
The family was pleasantly surprised on Christmas Day 1999, when Sean asked his longtime friend and companion, the lovely Mieka Moore, for her hand in marriage. They were married in Salt Lake City, Utah during the summer of 2000.
